The International Coalition for Trachoma Control (ICTC) joins the global community in mourning the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter.President Carter was an active and vocal champion of international human rights, peace, fighting disease and was firmly committed to the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem.Most notably, through the establishment of The Carter Center in 1982, President Carter advanced trachoma elimination among many of the world’s most neglected communities, including those in Central African Republic, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, the Republic of South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.President Carters commitment to international peace, democracy, human rights, and social and economic development, including improved health, contributed to him being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.ICTC is proud to work with The Carter Center to advance our shared goal of eliminating trachoma as a public health problem and offers its deepest condolences to President Carter’s family and friends, as well as colleagues at The Carter Center, and his many admirers around the world. “We have lost a great fighter in the battle against trachoma, but his work and mission to alleviate the suffering among the world’s poorest will continue to be carried forward by those he has inspired”  Angelia Sanders, Immediate Past Chair, ICTC
